چکیده

The direct flight muscles of Drosophila melanogaster are innervated by the anterior dorsal mesothoracic (ADM) nerve and the mesothoracic accessory (MAC) nerve. Each of the four conspicuously large axons in the ADM nerve serves one of the muscles designated/>aV,/><24 andpa5. Muscle pa4 is additionally innervated by a very small neurosecretory axon. Muscle pa6, also innervated by the ADM nerve, receives at least one small nerve fibre but no large axon. Musclepa2 is innervated by a large axon from the MAC nerve. Large motor axons, identified by serial section tracing from their respective muscles, are consistent among different individuals in both relative positions and relative diameters within the ADM nerve.

ERECT WING, the Drosophila member of a family of DNA binding proteins is required in imaginal myoblasts for flight muscle development.

The erect wing locus of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster encodes a protein, EWG, that shares extensive homology with the P3A2 DNA binding protein of sea urchin and a recently identified mammalian transcription factor. Loss-of-function erect wing alleles result in embryonic lethality. Viable alleles of erect wing cause severe abnormalities of the indirect flight muscles. We have analyzed th...

sidestep Encodes a Target-Derived Attractant Essential for Motor Axon Guidance in Drosophila

At specific choice points in the periphery, subsets of motor axons defasciculate from other axons in the motor nerves and steer into their muscle target regions. Using a large-scale genetic screen in Drosophila, we identified the sidestep (side) gene as essential for motor axons to leave the motor nerves and enter their muscle targets. side encodes a target-derived transmembrane protein (Side) ...

Muscle founder cells regulate defasciculation and targeting of motor axons in the Drosophila embryo

During Drosophila embryogenesis, motor axons leave the central nervous system (CNS) as two separate bundles, the segmental nerve (SN) and intersegmental nerve (ISN). From these, axons separate (defasciculate) progressively in a characteristic pattern, initially as nerve branches and then as individual axons, to innervate target muscles [1] [2]. This pattern of branching resembles the outgrowth ...

Neural Control of Wing Coordination in Flies

At the onset of each flight bout in flies, neural circuits in the CNS must rapidly integrate multimodal sensory stimuli and synchronously engage hinges of the left and right wings for coordinated wing movements. Whereas anatomical and physiological investigations of flight have been conducted on larger flies, molecular genetic studies in Drosophila have helped identify neurons that mediate vari...

Genetic Analysis of Netrin Genes in Drosophila: Netrins Guide CNS Commissural Axons and Peripheral Motor Axons

Two tandem Netrin genes in Drosophila are expressed at the midline of the developing CNS and in different subsets of neurons, muscles, and epidermal patches. In embryos carrying a small deficiency that deletes both genes, CNS axon commissures are partially missing or thinner. This phenotype is rescued by expressing either Netrin gene at the midline. Pan-neural expression of either gene causes d...
